A Pool Party in Brooklyn

Pool Parties at McCarren ParkBelieve it or not, Brooklyn’s newest hot hangout is a public pool. Greenpoint’s McCarren Park Pool has been empty for years, but it’s been reopened - as a stage and concert area. Instead of filling it with water, it fills with audience members; concertgoers sit in the empty pool and look up at the group as they perform on the deck. The acoustics of the sound bouncing off the empty pool walls create an effect similar to the better concert halls and opera houses. It’s a totally unique musical experience.

There have been a lot of great events at McCarren Park Pool over the summer - you can see a list of past and upcoming shows HERE. There’s a lot of good stuff happening, but what you WON’T see listed are shows the Pool is hosting from the end of July through August. Here’s a breakdown:

  • 7/29 brings us the post-punk goodness of Bloc Party and the Secret Machines, with openers Mew.
  • On 7/30 Brooklyn is treated to a FREE show by indie-popsters Of Montreal, who are actually from Georgia.
  • 8/11 and 8/12, McCarren Park Pool hosts what might be the hottest ticket of the summer. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sonic Youth will be playing together for two nights. Blood on the Wall opens on the 11th, Awesome Color on the 12th.
  • 8/13 delivers another FREE show — this time it’s the experimental noise-rock of Deerhoof.
  • Iron & Wine brings us their enjoyable country-folk on 8/17.
  • On 8/24, the Pool hosts a showcase of women singer-songwriters. The alt-country of Neko Case, the country-rock of Martha Wainwright and the enjoyably weird harp-and-voice compositions of Joanna Newsom are all featured on the same day.
  • You can’t go wrong with any of these shows or performers. Just remember to bring sun protection and a water bottle.
