Amazon Bets on E-Books with the Kindle

Amazon is really hoping this whole E-Books thing catches on. They’ve just gone and launched their own device, the Amazon Kindle, and it’s an E-Book reader that can also let you check your email and surf the web.
The $399 device has a black-and-white screen and a full keyboard, and it’s designed to download books directly and store them for your reading. It includes free, high speed EVDO connectivity to let you do that, but most of your connections will cost money. You can read blogs, but you’ll be paying per blog to do that. You can send emails, but you’ll be charged for emails with attachments. You can download books, but you’ll need to pay for them. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting device, one that is certainly different than anything else currently on the market. Are people willing to start ditching paperbacks in favor of a small device that can carry an entire bookshelf worth of books around on it? Time will tell.
