New Yorkers have the rare opportunity to see Amy LaVere at J&R Music World. The tiny country chanteuse known for slapping the hell out of an upright bass twice her size, will be signing autographs and performing songs from her second and latest CD release, Anchors & Anvils.
LaVere, who appeared as Wanda Jackson in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and as Christina Ricci’s hard-partying friend in Black Snake Moan says, “…there’s been a lot of growth since I recorded the last CD … I’ve played a ton of shows since the last record, and my material’s gone in a completely different direction.” That new direction has a lot to do with the deep grooves of classic soul music she and her band cooked up at renowned producer, Jim Dickinson’s Zebra Ranch studio.
Of his newest protege, Jim Dickinson says, “Amy LaVere is the most promising emerging artist I’ve seen in years. She has the whole package — the songs, the voice, the looks … You run across artists all the time who have part of it, but Amy has it all.”
“The throaty-voiced singer and bassist has never sounded better” writes Memphis Flyer’s Chris Davis, in his review of Anchors & Anvils.
