I’ve done a number of articles about British Television. I like it. As you may have seen, many British shows have been remade for American Television. This was mostly due to the fact that available technology prevented these shows from being aired in the States. We’re beyond that now with BBC America available on a number of cable and satellite networks. So I want to make you aware of another show that should get some of your attention: The Fades.
R&B recording artist Lalah Hathaway will be appearing live at J&R for a special performance and signing of her latest album “Where It All Begins”. Ms. Hathaway’s music career began in 1990 with her self-titled album Lalah Hathaway and has showed no signs of slowing down. A gifted pianist and vocalist, her combination of Jazz, R&B, and Pop garnered her early recognition as a rising star. Though it was her rich voice that attracted critics and fans alike to her music.

What a whirlwind this past weekend was for us here at J&R. J&R Jr. opened with quite a bang as hundreds of families flooded our new boutique. There was great music from Laurie Berkner, The Dirty Sock Funtime Band, Farmer Jason, and Dan Zanes. Ted Hills joined us for an excellent book reading and we had a few Princesses grace us with their royal presence. Kids and parents alike were mesmerized by The Amazing Max and his extremely entertaining combination of Magic and Comedy.
February 13 was a big day for us at 1 Ann Street. We had celebrated the Grand Opening of J&R Jr. with a terrific two day Kidstravaganza and now it was time to put on the suits for our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer presented J&R Jr. Executive Vice President Jason Friedman with a Proclamation from the Mayor’s Office recognizing J&R Jr Day.
Whitney Houston, one of the greatest singers of the last two decades died suddenly this past weekend at the age of 48. Her career took off in 1985 with the release of her self-titled album Whitney Houston. At the time of its debut it was the biggest selling release by a female artist in music history. Houston would go on to release ten albums that all reached diamond, gold, platinum, and multi-platinum status. She is the only artist to have seven consecutive Billboard 100 No.1 hit songs.

Donald Cortez Cornelius (1936 – 2012) creator of the long running music / dance show Soul Train was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, CA home early this morning. He was 75. Beginning his career as a radio announcer, “Don” wanted to produce a show akin to American Bandstand geared towards the African-American community.
