Babel was by far one of the best movies of 2006, bringing three seemingly disparate storylines together to highlight the trouble people have communicating across social and political borders. It features some of the best performances of the year along with an absolutely riveting set of storylines, beautiful cinematography, and adept editing.
Babel isn’t for the faint of heart. Based around an American tourist shot accidentally in Morocco and how it connects to an immigrant nanny taking her charges to Mexico and a lonely deaf-mute Japanese teenager, there really aren’t any characters in the movie that aren’t dealing with life-altering struggles. But the tension is made bearable by the subtle connections and overall message that doesn’t cram itself down your throat, unlike some other movies with multiple story arcs (ahem,Crash, ahem).
While it might not have ended up sweeping the Oscars, Babel is still one of the best films of the past year and a must-see for anyone who’s a fan of serious cinema.
