We were pleased as punch that Esperanza Spalding won the Grammy® for Best New Artist. It’s not just her mad bass-playing skills, her gorgeous voice, her bionic afro, her incredible sense of style.
It’s not just that her Chamber Music Society has been on our iPods all year, or that she seems to have single-handedly made jazz hip to a brand new generation, or that she rocked the White House at the tender age of twenty-four.
It’s that we feel like we were there early on. You know, before the bandwagon. You know, “way back when” . . .
Check out these incredible video clips of Esperanza performing live in City Hall Park at J&R’s MusicFest in 2008.
