Borat Comes to America

For those who don’t know, Borat is a naive, sexist “reporter” who travels to America to explore our culture. To get a feel for the character, you should check out this Borat interview done in character for Entertainment Weekly. (We find out he has a son named “HooeyLouis,” among other things.) YouTube has a lot of funny Borat clips, including this impromptu in-character Q and A session he did when the projector showing his film broke at a film festival. YouTube also has the first four minutes of the film. Readers can also get a look at how Borat’s unwitting dupes feel about their portrayal in the film in this BBC article.

Borat made his debut on Da Ali G Show, which we also recommend. Ali G was “fish out of water” comedy, taken to a ridiculous extreme: An East Indian guy from England who went all-out to try & come like an American gangster-rapper. That alone is pretty funny; now take that guy & have him interview movie stars and politicians. Their reactions to his embarassingly uninformed & misinformed questions could be painful to watch at times, but it was also comedy gold. He was a hit in England & got Madonna’s attention. After being in a video for her album Music, he got an HBO show. That’s where we first meet Borat. Now he’s in his own movie, and we can’t wait to see it.
