The key advantage SLR’s have over Point & Shoot cameras is the size of their sensor. A large sensor allows more light which in turn yields better colors and sharper low-light images.
The Sigma Lens Photo DP1 14 Megapixel Compact Camera addresses the issue by being the first Point & Shoot to have an SLR sized sensor making it possible to get SLR quality images from a small-bodied camera.
David Pogue from the NY Times recently reviewed the camera. It’s worth a look.
