Capture HD Video with the Samsung NV24HD

As technology advances, more cameras are incorporating high definition video recording as a feature. We’ve seen this feature on the Nikon D90, a first for a DSLR. Samsung has thrown their hat into the mix with the NV24HD.

The NV24HD is a svelte 10.2 megapixel point and shoot camera that is loaded with bleeding edge technology. Samsung chose to forgo the typical LCD screen on the back of most digital cameras. Instead they decided to use an AMOLED screen. AMOLED is an acronym for Active Matric Organic Light Emitting Diode. OLED technology does not suffer from glare that is all too prevalent with LCD screens in direct sunlight. The AMOLED screen allows you to view your shots in direct sunlight or any lighting condition without issue.

Of course, as a camera, it goes without saying that the NV24HD takes pictures, but the big draw to this camera apart from the beautiful crisp photos it takes, is the fact that it has the ability to record high definition video in 720p resolution. Playback of photo slideshows and video is easy since a single HDMI cable connected to your tv from the camera is all you need.

The NV24HD is available in black and silver.

Hey,
Speaking of HD video, I wanted to give you a heads up about a website we just finished building with the good folks at MotionBox, called ShareMyHD.com. It lets you upload, store, share, and even do some basic editing of HD footage online. Very curious to hear your thoughts about it!

I'm considering this camera but I understand it does not come with a cord to connect the camera to a Mac- and I've read about Mac compatibility issues. Can anyone comment?

The camera uses a USB cable, and works with Macs. The same USB cable that you would use on a PC will work on a Mac.

With regards to compatibility issues, according to Samsung, it will work with Mac OS 10.2 or later.

I've read some user reviews on CNET, and one user indicated that the picture quality was poor, they compared it to the picture quality found on their iphone. Please comment

sorry to butt in, i'm no expert and haven't seen video from this camera. but, i do have to say that the video quality on my iPhone is excellent!

I find that very hard to believe Joe. Whoever made that comparison was someone who either had the settings on the Samsung camera out of whack, or simply had no idea what they were doing.

The iPhone has no optical zoom, autofocus or even flash. It's a phone that can take pictures. It's not a full fledge camera, this Samsung is.

I think they were talking about the quality of the video the Samsung NV24HD takes being equivelent to the quality that displays on an iPhone. Nobody was talking about the iPhone's camera.

btw: on the subject of the iPhone's camera, my work on Flickr proves it's what you get out of a digital picture, not what the camera puts into it. And flash? Please everybody stop doing flash photography, it always looks whack. Nobody who cares about photography wants flash,
And another thing, nobody who cares about people will want to sneak up on them with a zoom lens.
And another thing... no, just kidding :)

If Joe meant video quality, then that's a silly comparison. One is a recording device, the other is a playback device. The quality of the video on the iPhone is dependent on the source material. A good encode will look good, even in a lower resolution. It's like comparing a camcorder to a dvd player, and then saying "Oh look, my DVD player looks better than my camcorder." The DVD player plays what you feed it. Some DVD's are reference quality, some are a mess of digital noise and artifacts.

However, 720p will still look better than video playback on an iPhone. That should not be debatable.

The problem with user feedback is that you are at the mercy of the technical prowess of the enduser. Oftentimes, people have no idea what they are talking about, yet they speak with such conviction that it is believable to the layman.
