As the Holiday Season approaches our attention turns to gatherings of family and friends to share good cheer and break bread. That last part, the breaking of bread, is a time-honored metaphor for sharing a meal. One particular item on the Holiday Menu has become the focus of the traditional fare: The Turkey.
A little history on this much-coveted fowl is in order. Meleagris gallopavo, more commonly known as the Wild Turkey, is native to the forests North America. When European settlers first discovered them they were incorrectly identified as a form of guinea fowl. Guinea fowl were also known as Turkey Fowl due to the fact that they were imported to Central Europe through Turkey. The name was shortened to just that of the country of origin and it became the name of the North American bird.

“To sleep, perchance to dream” is often a quest of many individuals. While occasional sleeplessness or infrequent sleep reduction often has no noticeable impairments, chronic irregular sleep patterns are associated with neurocognitive and mood disorders. REM (dream) sleep involves release of certain neurotransmitters and other chemicals that play roles in memory and alertness. A decline of regular REM cycles is considered one of the major theories that is linked to the development of dementias or Alzheimer Disease.
