Visiting New York City?

J&R

J&R is a magnet for out-of-towners, especially from Europe and South America. There is so much tourist activity in downtown NYC these days that tour buses are as commonplace as taxis. J&R has become a primary destination stop, along with Century 21, South Street Seaport and, of course, Ground Zero. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re from London, England, or London, Ohio.

So, if you’re planning a visit to New York, consider these comments from some important Visitor Guides:

NYPAGES, The Guide To Essential New York called J&R Music and Computer World “the best place in town to shop for computers, electronics, and appliances.” Noting wryly that, “New Yorkers like their discounted prices.” –Page 88, 2008 ed.

Frommer’s New York City 2008 raved that J&R “is the city’s top discount computer, electronics, small appliance, and office-equipment retailer.” Frommer’s suggested that prospective shoppers “peruse the store’s copious catalog or extensive website, both of which make advanced research, and mail-order and comparison shopping, easy.” –Page 331.

Perhaps the most complimentary to J&R was a recent TV broadcast on TF1, one of the largest networks in France. The commentators rave about the prices at J&R. You can see the video here.

Gerry Frank’s 2008-2009 guide suggested that J&R is “where to shop for bargains in New York.”

J&R “still maintains the kind of small business relationships that keeps its prices among the lowest in the city”, according to The Best Things To Do In New York. –Page 263.

“Choosing the right door is the hardest part” quips Access New York City. J&R has “one of the city’s largest selections of computer equipment and electronics.” –Page 22.

J&R has “an incomparable, large selection of quality merchandise, low prices and frequent sales”, claims Living $mart New York City. –Page 202-203.

It’s often said that word of mouth is the best advertising. Judging from the throngs of tourists flocking to J&R, the word is getting around.

Rush & Molloy

It’s no secret that America’s Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, loves opera. Our former mayor has been spotted many times in J&R’s classical department browsing for his favorite opera CDs. Mr. Giuliani was shopping recently at J&R, as chronicled by Rush & Molloy in the Daily News.

J&R Ad circa 1984

(scanned image by BadLuckCity)

You don’t have to be an old-timer to remember when gasoline was cheap. The same is true with electronics. Remember when DVD players cost hundreds of dollars? Well, now you can buy a Coby DVD209 for $24.99!

We were reminded of this by Philly-based blogger BadLuckCity, who recently published a vintage J&R ad. The 1984 ad in Rolling Stone Magazine also reminds us that blank cassette tapes and car stereo were huge sellers. Now, of course, music buffs rip CDs and car manufacturers are stepping all over themselves to announce new iPod-based sound systems.

The 1984 J&R ad lists a cordless Freedom Phone for $269.99; you can now buy a Uniden cordless phone for $14.99!

Thanks to BadLuckCity for the reality check. Times change, but J&R still offers the best prices— from the 70’s to the 21st Century.

Do You Know Where Your Children Are?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

This provocative question is very familiar to late evening viewers of Fox 5 News. Every evening before the 10pm news, a celebrity face reminds parents to check on the well-being of their kids. J&R Music and Computer World, the brick and mortar partner of JR.com, has been the proud sponsor of this important message for ten years.

Recent New York-area celebrities to ask the proverbial question include Joan Rivers, Darryl Strawberry, Jane Seymour, Paul Stanley of KISS, Reggie Jackson, Councilman Eric Gioia, Eddie K. Thomas, Anthony Anderson, Chazz Palminteri, and Joely Fisher.

Fox 5 has been so successful with this spot that thousands of parents ask the now-familiar question of themselves at 10pm, wherever they are.

My9 News on Buying a Super Bowl TV at J&R

Friday, February 8th, 2008

The biggest sales week for large-screen TVs is not Christmas, it’s the week leading up to the Super Bowl.

The week before Super Bowl XLII, New York’s local news channel, My9 News, came to the J&R Music World video outlet to do a feature entitled “Big Screen Deals”. Local newsperson Brenda Flanagan showed us “how to score a touchdown when it comes to getting the best deal in town”. Several of the best bargain-hunting tips still apply.

One, prices on current flat-screens tend to go down after the Super Bowl.

Two, if you wait, most of the 2008 models appear in March.

So, we hope you enjoyed the big game on a large-screen TV, but if not, don’t despair. The big deals on big screens are even better now, and new TV models will soon be here. Stay tuned to JR.com for all the latest in large-screen televisions.

J&R on “The Dr. Phil Show”

Apple iPod Nano

Last Thursday’s topic on The Dr. Phil Show was “What’s Age Got to Do with It?”, an episode dedicated to tips on looking younger, feeling better and getting healthier. On the show, they gave away three great hip, exercise related gadgets, courtesy of J&R: A 4GB Silver iPod Nano, a
Belkin Neoprene Armband for 3G iPod Nano and a Belkin iPod FM Tunebase II.

The iPod nano is wafer-thin but mighty. The 4 GB capacity is more than enough for your workout music playlist plus a movie or several TV shows to watch while you’re resting. With great battery life, you’ll get up to 24 hours of audio or 5 hours of video on a single charge.

The Belkin iPod FM TuneBase FM lets you listen to your iPod by transmitting the sound on an open FM frequency to your car radio. Although other products do this in a basic way, only the Tunebase uses ClearScan technology to scan the available spectrum to find the best FM frequency delivering crisp, clean Audio.

The Belkin Neoprene Armband is a great armband holder for your nano made of neoprene, providing a comfortable fit that is hand-washable and water-resistant. An integrated pocket secures a gym key while you work out.

So if getting back into shape is one of your New Year’s resolutions, then you can’t go wrong with these fantastic products.
