Front Street is Alive & Kicking

Front Street

Looking for one of New York’s newest dining hotspots? We don’t have very far to go. Just a few blocks away, the Downtown Seaport area has been infused with a whole block of great restaurants. The area was home to the smelly fish market for the longest but they’ve packed their bags, uh, and fish and headed to new digs. Since then many new restaurants have moved into the up and coming area. Along Front Street, where the start of the area revitalization has begun, many great restaurants have opened. Whether you’re looking for a drink with friends or a first class gourmet meal this area has it all. We look forward to seeing what this trendy new area has in store for us next.

“It’s 10pm, do you know where your children are?”, is perhaps the most famous line in New York and comes from the J&R sponsored Public Service Announcement which marks the beginning of 10 O’Clock News on WNYW, New York’s Fox 5. When the New York Post ran a “Where are they now?” story on the children who have been pictured in the spot’s four decade run, they didn’t find the most familar child.

Yankee’s wrap-up April 26, 2007

Friday, April 27th, 2007

YankeesThe Yankees lost their 6th. consecutive game, dropping a 6-0 decision… leaving the Yanks apprehensive about their starting rotation!

Phil Hughes major league debut looked promising, striking out 5 over 4 1/3 innings, but the offense was non existent against Toronto right-hander A.J. Burnett.

Shut out for the first time this season, the Yankees generated only four singles in 7 innings against the Toronto right-hander.

The Yankees want Kei Igawa to work on his placement. Consequently, his slot for the weekend series against the Red Sox will be in the bullpen… not starting.

A-Rod.’s record-tying 14 home runs in April required only 18 games. As of today A-Rod’s stats are: .378 Avg., 14 HR, 34 RBI, .436 OBP, and .976 SLG. A-Rod reiterates “I want to stay in New York, no matter what.”

Chien-Ming Wang was officially activated from the DL on Tuesday. Wang has been on the mend after straining his right hamstring on March 23rd.

Prior to being struck by a pitch in the first inning on Tuesday, Derek Jeter was hitting .316 (25-for-79). Jeter took batting practice on Thursday but was scratched from the lineup with soreness.

It’s raining right now, and Andy Pettitte is scheduled to get his second chance to beat the Red Sox in the series opener tonight… boy do I wish we had a dome!

Question of the week:

What was the score of the Yankees worst loss ever?

Tribeca Film Fest Starts Today

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Tribeca Film Fest

Want to see some awesome movies before they hit the theatres? Well, you’re in luck, as the Tribeca Film Festival is starting today, and there are more movies showing than you could possibly see in a single week, so there are lots of options. Running from today through May 6th, there are tons of movies, panels, and events to see, so you really shouldn’t let it pass you by without seeing at least something.

Tomorrow, if you’re feeling cheap, you can go to a free outdoor screening of Dirty Dancing at the World Financial Center Plaza. Or you could grab the kids and head to the Family Street Festival on May 5th, which will feature live performers, food, and games. Then there are the movies… oh so many movies. There’s a huge database of the films that are being shown throughout the festival on the website, and unlike many festivals, you can purchase tickets to just one or two screenings rather than having to drop thousands on an all-you-can-view pass. It makes the festival doable, and you should jump at the chance to exercise your right as a New Yorker to see stuff before the rest of the country.

“Spiderman Week” Promotes Some Movie I’ve Never Heard Of

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Spiderman Week NYC

I don’t know if you guys have heard about this, but there’s this little art-house film opening up in about a week called Spiderman 3. Apparently it’s based on a graphic novel, which are becoming more and more popular these days, and the city is kind enough to allow for a week of events to help this low-budget movie get off the ground. Hence, Spiderman Week is coming.

From April 30th to May 6th, there will be all sorts of really cool Spiderman-related events going on around the city. Comic nerds will want to head to the New York Public Library by Bryant Park any time during the week to check out their collection of rare and original copies of Spiderman comics, many of which have never been shown to the public before. Just make sure you wipe that chocolate off your fingers before flipping through the pages.

Kids will have plenty of stuff to keep them occupied, like a mask making workshop at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, a scavenger hunt at the Bronx Zoo, and a photo-op with a 60-foot-tall Spidey at the Sony Building. Bigger kids can scale the climbing wall at the Chelsea Piers or get some Spiderman-themed workout tips from the pros at Crunch, but that sounds a bit less fun than a scavenger hunt, doesn’t it?

In the end, we can only hope that these events help the little movie that could make some money.

Forza 2

Fonza Motorsport 2 Brings the Track to Your Apartment

April 19th, 2007 | Adam — “If you’re a car buff, Manhattan isn’t exactly the best place to get your kicks. You can’t really open the throttle on Broadway, and the West Side Highway is a poor excuse for the open road… Forza Motorsport 2 for the Xbox 360 is on its way…” [ more ]

Samsung BD-UP5000

Samsung to Release Dual-format HD Player

April 17th, 2007 | Adam — There are few things more annoying to a home theatre geek than an unnecessary format war, like the one currently raging between Blu-ray and HD DVD. It’s a war that was started by a bunch of greedy companies who couldn’t settle their standards before going to market, so they brought two near-identical formats out to customers to see what would stick… [ more ]

Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon

April 16th, 2007 | RNYK — “It’s not often that the way an interview ends tells you more about an artist an actual question. Except for when someone gets socked in the face, of course. That’s not exactly what happens when we cornered Kings of Leon drummer, Nathan Followill, for 45 minutes in his Nashville home…” [ more ]

Jarvis Cocker

Jarvis Cocker’s Global Outlook is Still Less Than Rosy

April 14th, 2007 | Daisy — “Britpop revisited: Oasis plagiarized the Beatles brilliantly but only wrote convincingly about snorting cocaine and seducing your sister. Blur genre-hopped nimbly, but couldn’t even say “woo-hoo” without irony. What about Pulp, the brainchild of the bookish and bespectacled Jarvis Cocker? They had style and depth… ” [ more ]

Yankee’s Wrap-Up

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Yankees

A-Rod leads slugging leaders with .981 SLG, 10 HR, .365 Avg., 23 RBI, and .435 OBP … I guess losing the weight helped! Torre, Jeter and Cano wore Robinson’s No. 42 for the club’s game at Oakland, in addition to Rivera. The Yankees‘ suffered another major hit on Sunday, as right-handers Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano were both placed on the 15-day DL.

Jeff Karstens and Wright will get their cracks at pitching in Fenway Park over the weekend, Torre announced Wednesday.

With Doug Mientkiewicz 0-for-21 slump, Josh Phelps was given the start Saturday at first base. Kyle Farnsworth, who showed promise in Spring Training with a 1.80 ERA in 10 relief appearances, has not been able to make that early success translate to the regular season. In 5 appearances, his ERA is 10.38.

Kei Igawa picks up his first Major League victory… making good use of his changeup and curve. Just a thought: I wish the new stadium had a retractable dome. When it’s raining, snowing, too cold, you could close the dome and prevent delays, double-headers…and increase attendance.

Last-but-not-least: thank-goodness the Yankees bullpen has been strong!!!

Question of the week? Which Yankees player hit a broken-bat single, as six superballs that came bouncing out?
