Children of Men: The Future May be Bleak, but at Least it’s Exciting

Children of Men, despite the lack of Oscar love, was without a doubt one of the best movies of last year. Set in a bleak near-future where a virus has made every woman on earth infertile, chaos has overtaken the world as people deal with the knowledge that they’re witnessing the extinction of the species. The atmosphere is thick with dread and violence, bringing some of the best totalitarian, Orwellian images to the screen of any recent film.
However, all is not without hope. The story revolves around an underground group who has discovered a mother who has given birth — the first human birth in nearly 20 years — and needs to transport her away from the fascist government and roving mobs that they’re surrounded by. What follows is a heart-pounding adventure with one of the most memorable extended action shots ever put to film at its climax. Children of Men is one of the most intelligent and engaging action movies to come out in some time, one that really shouldn’t be missed.
