Christoph Eschenbach explains his approach to the Tchaikovsky, Symphony No 4, recorded with Philadelphia Orchestra for his current Ondine hybrid Super Audio CD release. Also remembers the terrible setting and moving experience of conducting the Memorial Concert for 9/11 victims. On a lighter note, he observes that the composer “scene” globally is bigger than ever before and he recommends contemporary composers whom he expects will be “survivors for the future”. He recalls the impact of boyhood experiences of attending symphonies conducted by the legendary Wilhelm Furtwangler and later being similarly impressed with Leonard Bernstein, “performances I will never forget”.
