Definitive 200 Records

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

NARM, the National Association of Music Retailing and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, have compiled a list they call the “Definitive 200.” These are 200 albums that they deem classic and which they feel should be in any music fan’s library. The list covers a number of genres and will be officially announced on March 6th, from Capitol Records’ famous Studio A. To celebrate the event, Brian Wilson will be performing songs from Pet Sounds - sure to be one of the Definitive 200.

We find these lists interesting, more often because of what’s not on them. What makes an album “classic?” What makes an album a must-have? Is it popularity? Influence on other musicians and performers? How well the songs age? Ask 10 different people to name 10 classic albums — you’re sure to get 10 different lists. Music taste is such a subjective thing, after all. Take me, for instance. The first time I made out with a girl, a punk band called Screeching Weasel was playing. They’re pretty obscure, even though Blink 182 covered their song “The Girl Next Door” for their first album, Buddha. There’s no chance of Screeching Weasel being on the Definitive 200. It doesn’t matter, though; the first time I made out with a girl, they were there. That makes them classic to me.
