You might not recognize the name Dntel, but you’d recognize his music. As the unsung half of the super-popular Postal Service, Jimmy Tamborello is the one who created the beats that that dreamy Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie sang over on their breakout debut album. He’s an expert at creating fun, catchy songs that get stuck in your head for days, and he’s excellent at choosing amazingly talented guests to sing for him
His new album, Dumb Luck features such excellent vocalists as Jenny Lewis, Conner Oberst, and Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear. It’s a darker album than either The Postal Service’s Give Up or Dntel’s last album, Life is Full of Possibilities, but that doesn’t make it any less infectious. It’s actually more balanced, and across the board the songs are stronger and stand up better to repeat listenings. Dumb Luck is proof that Tamborello can stand on his own without his emo sweetheart Ben Gibbard by his side.
