Fresh DVDs

March comes in like a lion and the brisk winds remind us that it’s still time to snuggle home in front of the TV. This week’s DVD releases aim to subvert your winter doldrums with raucous comedy, exciting fantasy, and good old drama.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of KazakhsLeading the new releases on DVD this week is Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, the riotously funny movie in 2006 that became a long-standing hit, at least as far as western civilization goes. Though some branded some scenes as extremely bad taste, it drew record crowds and acclaim. Sacha Baron Cohen plays Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev who leaves home to do a documentary in the USA.

Peter Pan Platinum Edition, 2-Disc Set
You can also hook into Disney’s Peter Pan release. The 1953 movie ranks high among Disney classics like Snow White and Pinocchio. The 2-Disc Platinum Edition contains the original movie as well as the new digitally restored version. The digital restoration was completely faithful to the original but removed scratches and dirt found on the original print. Sound was also improved and remixed for 5.1-channel surround.

Stargate: Atlantis - Season 2 5-Disc Set
You’ll also find the complete second season of Stargate Atlantis, the ninth season of South Park, and the sixth season of Northern Exposure (I don’t even remember the show lasting six years) and Moonlighting, season five. Two Dr. Who episodes will also be released, The Invasion and The Sontaran Experiment.

The Prisoner of Zenda 1937/1952 - JR.comSome old film classics, spanning Hollywood’s golden decade, become new again with DVD versions of 1939’s Jesse James, with Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda, and The Prisoner of Zenda (1937 and 1952 versions). 1948’s The Three Musketeers and 1949’s Madame Bovary offer more swashbuckling entertainment and drama.

Fast Food Nation - JR.comThough Halloween is far off, thrills await with the release of Masterpiece Theater’s Dracula biting through arteries for life and romance. Real chills come from the natural horrors of the satirical Fast Food Nation, which may make you think twice before biting into that piece of fried chicken.
