For almost two years, the PS3 was the cheapest blu-ray deck available. The bang for the buck champ has been dethroned by a plethora of players from Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and Memorex that are all cheaper. Sure, these BD players might not play games, but if all you want is movie playback, then the PS3 will likely no longer be on your radar.
In hopes of increasing consumer adoption of the PS3, Sony will start releasing hybrid blu-ray discs that contain both a videogame and a blu-ray movie on one disc. This is nothing new. If you recall, in late 2007, the collectors edition of Stranglehold on the PS3 featured the John Woo shoot ‘em up classic, Hard Boiled. At only $10 more than the regular game itself, it was a bargain.
There’s no word on pricing on these hybrid discs, but I hope they follow the Stranglehold model.
