Get “Warped”

We’d like to remind our readers that today’s the day of the big Sleater-Kinney farewell show, over at Webster Hall. If you don’t have tickets, or aren’t able to go for whatever reason, you may be missing out on a great moment in rock.

Warped Tour 2006But that’s not your only option for great rock you won’t hear anywhere else. This Saturday, August 5th, the Nassau Coliseum hosts the Warped Tour. This year, they’ve moved away from the emo and pop-punk heavy schedule they’ve had before, integrating new faces with old veterans. For example, NOFX have performed at almost every warped tour, and AFI have done several. Both bands mix fast riffs and crunchy guitars with unique lyrics. NOFX tour behind Wolves In Wolves Clothing, which deliver the same classic sound they’re known for and loved (or hated). AFI plays behind their latest, Decemberunderground. It follows the sound they laid down in their underground hit Sing The Sorrow.

Anti-FlagAnti-Flag is another stalwart we’re looking forward to seeing. Their catchy, aggressive tunes and radical lyrics create the most enjoyable agitprop this side of The Clash. We’re also impressed by how they still look & sound like pissed-off teenagers, over a decade after forming. Anti-Flag tours behind their latest, For Blood And Empire. Another one to catch is Gogol Bordello. These “Gypsy punks” have made a great reputation for themselves with their scorching live shows. The mix of punk guitar with traditional Gypsy and Russian instrumentation should be a nice change of pace. Gogol Bordello tours behind Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike.

Catch 22Another break from the usual will be Catch 22, whose catchy ska-punk makes you do more than just mosh. Fun fact about Catch 22: They’re like the lucky charms of the underground. Several bands who’ve opened for them had hit records later, like Sum 41, Bowling For Soup, Taking Back Sunday, and Thursday. Speaking of which, The emo-hardcore sound of Thursday and their latest, City By The Light Divided, make up part of the emo battalion this year. Saves The Day will also be there to please those skinny, shaggy-haired kids in tight clothes and white belts. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of straight-on punk bands to cancel out the weepiness — from The Bouncing Souls and The Casualties, to Rise Against and Senses Fail. Rounding out the experience this year are a few metal bands. The ones we’re looking forward to seeing are Eighteen Visions and 30 Seconds to Mars, whose singer Jared Leto was the prettyboy in My So-Called Life and Requiem For A Dream.

Finally, there are some Warped Tour bands we know nothing about, but still want to see. The main reason is that we like their names:

  • Stretch Arm Strong
  • Protest the Hero
  • The Pink Spiders
  • Super Geek League
  • Nightlife
  • You can see a full Warped Tour schedule, complete with bands, HERE.
