According to Reuters, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will become the world’s largest smartphone maker this quarter, overtaking struggling Nokia, which has lead the market since 1996. Samsung will take the top spot while Apple’s iPhone moves to second place. Nokia will occupy the third spot.
The big factor, however, is that Apple has now decided to market the iPhone 4 as an unlocked GSM cellphone. This means you’re not stuck at negotiating a deal with Verizon or AT&T. You can seek out your own favorite GSM provider, wherever they are. Obviously, the unlocked iPhone 4 is selling at a much higher price than the locked version.
Now that iPhone is ready for the open market, as are Samsung models, how long will Samsung reign as Regent of the Smartphone class?
