Go Back to Your Roots with Final Fantasy II

When it comes to video game franchises, it doesn’t get much better than Final Fantasy. One of the longest running and most popular video game franchises of all time, the upcoming PS3 version is Final Fantasy XIII. Yes, that’s 13, for those of you unfamiliar with roman numerals, and that doesn’t count the spin-offs and mini-sequels such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy X-2. But it’s always good to go back to your roots, to see where a phenomenon started. And you can do just that with the rerelease of Final Fantasy II for the PSP.
Released originally in 1989, the game holds up surprisingly well for having been around for so long. Some of the basic tenants of RPG games that we still enjoy today can be seen in their embryonic stages here, and the storyline and characters live up to the high standard that the subsequent games have set. Basically, if you’re a Final Fantasy or even just an RPG fan, you’re not going to want to miss this game.
