For years those adventurous enough to jump off a cliff for fun, ski down treacherous slopes, or mountain bike down sheer peaks have been looking for a way to bring their adventures home. Big camcorders and unprotected still cameras were too unwieldy and more often than not created problems instead of solving them. The GoPro Helmet Hero is the ideal solution for the adventurous soul. The Helmet Hero is a small wearable camera that shoots at 1080p and takes still images at a great 5MP resolution.

On the surface, this compact camera looks ordinary yet it is anything but. Recording at resolutions of 1080p / 960p / 720p at 30 and 60 frames per second (fps), it offers professional quality though 60fps is not available at all resolutions. The camera uses SD cards for recording (sadly not included) up to a maximum capacity of 32GB. Being a weekend photographer, the still camera function was of particular interest to me. The all-important hands free aspect of the Helmet Hero had me asking, “How do I get this camera to take stills if it’s mounted on a helmet?” GoPro answered the question by equipping the Hero with Interval Shooting. By simply pressing the shutter button once you can shoot awesome print-quality stills at 2 / 5 / 10 / 30 or 60 second intervals. The more traditional single shot, short burst, and self-timer modes are also available when you actually want to handle the camera. Though you’ll be guessing as to what you shoot unless you pick up the LCD BacPac for preview and playback. This is a really cool lightweight accessory that fully integrates into the system. Take a look at the Hero in action below.
Talking about accessories, I was truly impressed with the gear included in the package. Every strap, mount, and adhesive pad necessary to firmly affix the camera to a helmet are included. The protective housing is extremely rugged and waterproofed to a depth of 180’ or 60m for you metric types. There is also a hefty assortment of mounts, housings, and even an easy lens replacement kit should the need arise (and it will!).
Going on your next adventure soon? Bring back the proof in crisp High-Definition with the GoPro Helmet Hero. It will probably outlast you!
