Great Gift Idea: Nabaztag, The WiFi Bunny

We’re always looking for a new toy to attach to our PC, especially one that adds a bit of personality to it. That’s why we’re enjoying the Nabaztag WiFi Bunny. Nabaztag is a pet you don’t have to feed or clean up after — plus it’ll tell you when you have e-mails and read you the headlines. Just try and train a real live bunny to do that.

Nabaztag connects to your local WiFi network and starts feeding you the information you ask from it. If you set it up to read you business news and weather reports, it will. The bunny goes online, processes that information and reads it to its user, in any voice or accent you choose. You can also train it to read you e-mails, news headlines from around the world, or even special messages from one Nabaztag to another. There’s a special website you can use to send a message directly to any bunny, around the world. Each one has its own name and personality; the Nabaztag will say random things, offer quotes - even do t’ai chi with its cute little moving bunny ears.

The bunnies all have built-in internal LEDs that light up in multiple patterns, to show you when you’ve received a message or e-mail. The developers have created an open API that allows you to program the Nabaztag for more customized features, or to give it a personality that suits you more. There’s a growing fan base of Nabaztag users who’ve even customized clothing for their bunnies, like >on this blog. There’s even “nabcasts,” a growing group of podcasters who send their shows directly to Nabaztag through the Web.

Nabaztag is a sure bet for computer users who want a wireless interface that keeps them connected and leaves their hands-free. It’s also just plain cute, and it looks different on your desk. We see it as one of the sleeper hits of the Christmas season — you can order yours HERE.
