Helio is a niche phone company that has a specific market in mind: people who like their phones to be fancy and feature filled. If you just want a phone that makes calls and stores your contacts, you’re probably best sticking with Verizon or Cingular. But if you want a phone that’ll give you fun features like GPS and high-speed mobile Internet access, Helio has the potential to make you very happy.
They already have a small line of exclusive and high-end phones, a line that they added to this week with their new Heat. Heat is a slim, sexy slider that is so loaded with features you’ll wonder how they fit it all into such a small package. It’s got GPS that works with Google Maps along with their Buddy Beacon feature. Buddy Beacon lets you tell any of your friends where you are at any time, and you can see where they are when trying to meet up. It also has high-speed 3G web access, with exclusive mobile versions of popular sites such as MySpace, Wikipedia, and Boing Boing. There’s also a great camera that does stills and video and a high-quality screen.
The best part about Helio is probably their rate plans, which goes the opposite route of the nickel-and-diming other carriers. Rather than forcing you to pay for every text message and minute of web access, you pay a flat fee and get all you can eat access to all the features Helio has to offer. With a new phone and sweet features like that, why go back to Verizon?
