Jack Sparrow Approved

It’s a shame that silly online “pirates vs. ninjas” debate has died down. Well, OK - no it’s not. Like most incidents of geek humor, it’s funnier in concept than in execution. The joke was eventually run into the ground, but if you missed out you can look it up at Wikipedia. The only reason it’s a shame is that there’s a new pirate movie coming out, to add more fuel to the “debate.”

PoC - Legend of Jack SparrowYep, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is being released on July 7th. The first one, Curse Of The Black Pearl, was a surprise hit thanks to Johnny Depp’s performance as Capt. Jack Sparrow. In Dead Man’s Chest the focus is mainly on Depp’s character. Sparrow’s in debt to a ghost ship and he ropes in his friends from the first movie to help him out. It should be as much fun as the first one, if not more. You can even be part of the action, by pre-ordering up the video game tie-ins. You might also want the Curse Of The Black Pearl DVD to refresh your memory about the characters.

Speaking of games, one of the surprise hits for the DS is New Super Mario Bros. If you were born after 1980 you probably grew up knowing and loving the Super Mario Bros. games. That love seems to carry over to the new system - it’s already sold over 500,000 copies in the US alone. The game recreates all the classic Mario game levels and moves, all in one game. We can’t wait to use the Tanooki Suit from Mario 3 when we’re fighting the Hammer Brothers. (The DS Lite was just released in Europe today, too — and demand for it is insane. This is definitely the hot game system of the year.

In other gaming news, there’s a patch available for Stacked with Daniel Negreanu. The poker fever that started a couple of years ago hasn’t died down yet — people are still playing like crazy, both in real life and online. Stacked with Daniel Negreanu is a great recreation of pro poker tournaments, but the Xbox version had a few bugs. You can fix those bugs through an Xbox Live download, for an even better all-night card game experience.
