J&R Remembers Nick Ashford, 1942 – 2011

Share

In addition to being one half of one of the greatest songwriting duos of the Twentieth Century, Nick Ashford was a great friend to J&R. He is fondly remembered for his appearances at J&R with his longtime partner and wife, Valerie Simpson.

Ashford & Simpson’s ties to J&R run deep. The duo performed at the J&R stores in Downtown New York on a number of occasions. In addition, they graciously performed at J&R sponsored charity events. In 2009, J&R founder Rachelle Friedman presented the duo the NARM Outstanding Achievement Award.

Ashford & Simpson wrote some of Motown’s greatest songs, including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “You’re All I Need To Get By”, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, and “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)”. As performers, Ashford and Simpson’s best-known song was “Solid” (1984 US and 1985 UK). The duo was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.
