Manhattan Fans Believe in Bieber
“We have been waiting since 10:30 p.m. last night!” 24-year-old Natalie said at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She and three others, including two very young children, had camped out a total of 18 hours to make sure they got to have their one minute with heartthrob Justin Bieber, on the occasion of the launch of his new album, “Believe.”
The crazed fans started lining up early Tuesday morning with policemen guarding all entries and exits of the East Village record store J&R, waiting for the 18-year-old Canadian singer who was expected at 2 p.m. that day.
Fans were all decked out in “We love Justin” T-shirts and chanting “Justin, Justin, Justin!” Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer also played the fan on Tuesday, declaring it “Justin Bieber Appreciation Day” in Manhattan. (Mr. Bieber also played at the Apollo Theater in Harlem Tuesday night.
When Mr. Bieber’s “entourage” came through a side door, fans inside started to break down into tears and were in hysterics when Mr. Bieber finally arrived, an hour behind schedule. He spent about five minutes in the front, blocked by press, before removing himself from the store. In the back, he specifically asked for the press to leave so that he could have time alone with his fans, helping to illustrate why the singer has so many millions of fans devoted to him.
Mothers and fathers were there with cameras ready to capture their adolescents’ proudest moment. In fact, some parents were crying alongside their children, reassuring them that everything would be OK.
An 11-year-old Taylor, crying hysterically, could hardly string a sentence together.
When asked why she was so distraught, “I love him” were the only words she could muster.
Ally, Bridget and Isabella, three friends (all between 12 and 13 years old), said all they wanted to do in life was meet Justin Bieber. One of the girls announced, “I just went up to him and I said ‘I love you’ right away.”
While her tears continued to stream down, she said, “I couldn’t believe that it was him, I just kept on saying, is it true? Is it true?” Larissa, another crying adolescent, revealed, “I’ve been waiting for this moment for three years.”
