When you wonder what the hip New Yorkers are doing with their free time, we know exactly what you think about: Knitting. No, really - and if you don’t, you should. Knitting is a big thing in this town, believe it or not. The hobby used to be popular among grannies but it’s picked up a huge following with the younger, urban crowd. We can see why: There are a lot of fashionable women looking to stand out without paying Prada or Vuitton prices. It’s also a creative outlet — you get to pick your yarn, colors and patterns to create something no one else has. Wearing a hand-knit sweater or leggings that you designed is an easy, inexpensive way to stand out in the crowd. That goes for the guys — a lot of those fashionable young women have boyfriends. Knitting a hat or scarf for them is a cute, cheap way to show you care, plus it marks him as being taken. (”Hey, that guy’s cute and he isn’t wearing a ring. Oh wait - knit hat, knit scarf. He’s in a relationship.”) Plus, it’s getting cold out and knitted gloves & sweaters keep you toasty.
So if you want to knit something special, or want to learn how, where do you go? A good place to start is Knit New York. They have basic knitting courses and can help beginners find others to help them learn. New York Knits is another good choice, for colorful knit accessories. To meet & hang out with other knitters, a beginner should check out The Point in Greenwich Village. It’s designed to accomodate knitting fans & the food’s pretty good, too. For supplies, we recommend The Yarn Co. on Broadway & 82nd. It’s the best source for knitting, crochet and needlepoint.
Feel free to get started and create something unique. Just remember, you aren’t limited to clothes. Go nuts and see what you come up with. Will it be hand-stitched iPod cases with “Just Married” embroidered on them? Maybe some crocheted bombs, complete with a burning fuse ? Only time, and your imagination, will tell.
