Little Miss Sunshine Steals Our Hearts, Perhaps Some Oscars

Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine was one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year, one of those quirky indie films that starts off with festival buzz and ends up with a wide theatrical release and a handful of Oscar nods. It came up pretty big when the nominations were announced last week, picking up best picture, best supporting actor (for Alan Arkin), best supporting actress (for Abigail Breslin), and best original screenplay.

What makes this movie so endearing? Its characters. You’ve got the mopey, silent teenager who’s obsessed with Nietzsche, the depressed, gay Proust scholar, the self-help guru who can’t even help himself, the drug-addict grandpa, and, of course, the wannabe beauty queen little girl. With all those characters tossed into a minivan for a road trip, where can you go wrong? Throw in apt direction by Welcome to the Dollhouse director Todd Solondz and you’ve got the recipe for a surefire indie hit. Check it out now so you can sound like you know what you’re talking about when you’re watching the Oscars.
