Live From CES: Verizon Unveils Mobile TV Service

V Cast Mobile TV

Verizon announced their new V CAST Mobile TV service here at CES, allowing customers to watch live, streaming television on their mobile phones. It’ll work one two new phones set to be released soon, one from Samsung and one from LG.

The quality of the feed is surprisingly good, but it’s not all good news. First, there are only seven channels confirmed with an eighth on the way. Notably missing from the list of channels is ABC, but you’ll get CBS, NBC, MTV, Comedy Central, and a few more. You’ll need to pull out a big, ugly antenna to get a signal, so if you’re ashamed of having dorky gadgets out in public you might not want to get something so conspicuous. Overall, however, it’s a cool step forward in mobile entertainment. It certainly isn’t the best mobile TV can be, but it’s a promising first step to say the least. The service doesn’t have a launch date yet, but it should be sometime in the second quarter of this year.
