Lou Reed Brings Berlin to Brooklyn

Lou Reed Berlin

Lou Reed, frontman of the Velvet Underground and widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the last century, is in Brooklyn this weekend. He’s performing his concept album Berlin start to finish at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Greenpoint, something that any serious Lou Reed or VU fan should try their hardest to get to.

Berlin is quite unlike Reed’s other work. It lacks the hard edges of the Velvet Underground’s music and the playful ostentation of Transformer, it’s a dark and often depressing album. Right from the opening samples of the title track to the last notes of the aptly-titled Sad Song, it grabs you and doesn’t let you go. Lou will be performing the album start to finish for the first time ever, as when it was originally released in 1973 it was released to a generally confused and lukewarm reaction. Only later did it become a cult hit, being remastered and reissued in the late 90’s.

The shows in Brooklyn started last night and run until Sunday.
