Matisyahu’s Latest, “No Place To Be”
Esquire called him “the most intriguing reggae artist in the world.” Matisyahu’s new album dropped yesterday — No Place To Be is great old-school reggae, with touches of dancehall. Straight out of Crown Heights, this member of the Hasidic community shook the world of reggae. His appearance and faith has been criticized as a gimmick, but he’s defended his Orthodox Jewish faith in multiple interviews. Regardless, there’s no denying his talent - Matisyahu’s fan base cuts across religious lines. His powerful vocals, solid reggae grooves and electric stage presence are as lively as any of the best Jamaican performers. His music and lyrics are positive and uplifting, bringing listeners the message of Yahweh without preaching or trying to convert anyone. If you’re looking for some new beats, and want to forget all the Christmas music you’ve absorbed, we suggest you pick up No Place To Be. It’s a good way to get into the party mood, and start warming up for New Year’s.
