Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition

kob

You know, jazz is a genre dear to my heart. Despite the lack of fanfare and acknowledgment by the mainstream, jazz is a genre that is ever evolving with fresh, young talent brimming at the cusp of stardom within the jazz world. Artists like Melody Gardot, Esperanza Spalding, Christian Scott and Aaron Parks just to name a few. Yet, despite the waves made by the new talent, jazz fans always go back to the greats of yesterday. When it comes to jazz, the more things change, the more they stay the same. We always go back and listen to the timeless classics by the masters. The artists who are so prolific that one needs not mention their full name. Just one name and everyone knows exactly who you are talking about. Coltrane, Monk, Gillespie, Ellington and of course Miles.

For those of us who still enjoy the masters at the rein of the modern jazz movement, the upcoming release of the Kind Of Blue 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition is highly anticipated.

Originally recorded in 1959, Kind Of Blue is regarded as the quintessential jazz album of the 20th Century. It’s universally opined as one of the best jazz albums in history for its standard of excellence. It is also the best-selling jazz album of all time. Miles Davis assembled a dream team of artists for the session. He got John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb to collaborate with him. Is it any wonder why this album is so revered?

The Collector’s Edition is full of fantastic stuff. First, a CD of the original album, remastered with bonus tracks. Next, another CD of the first live jam session performed by the group on May 26, 1958, in addition to The Den Haag Concert and The Zurich Concert. Then, a DVD featuring an expanded Making Of Kind Of Blue documentary, as well as the television program, The Sound Of Miles Davis. A hardcover book with additional photos and memorabilia is included. And finally, the coup de grace, a 180-gram blue color vinyl lp of Kind Of Blue rounds off the package.

The Kind Of Blue 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition will be available September 30th. You can pre-order it here.
