Uniden WIN1200 is a 5.8GHz Digital Cordless home telephone expected to arrive in stores very soon. What sets it apart from other cordless phones is its ability to also work with Windows Live Messenger. This lets you use your broadband Internet connection to make phone calls anywhere - locally, nationally, internationally - at the lowest calling rates available.
This means that the WIN1200 can hook up to your regular phone jack at home for use as a regular telephone using your regular service or it can hook up to be used with your DSL or Cable Internet service. A joint venture by MSN and MCI, you can do much more than just a regular phone call using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology.
Windows Live Messenger, available from MSN, adds some amazing features that weren’t available on the original Messenger. For example, you can make Video Phone Calls. You can get live, full-screen (640×480) video, with fully synchronized audio. You and your contact will need compatible Web cameras, microphones, and speakers (or headphones). Using Windows Live Call in Messenger, you can start making calls within minutes to your friends across the country or around the world by signing up for MCI Web Calling. You can purchase minutes up front from MCI, and then add minutes when your balance runs low.
Once subscribed to the service, customers can place calls to and from more than 220 countries with rates starting at about 2-cents per minute to the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Western Europe. Upon sign-up, MCI Web Calling customers will receive up to one hour of free calls.
Both the Uniden WIN1200 and Windows Live Messenger are expected to be available around May 2006
