New York is a Hotspot Heaven
So you just bought your new notebook computer and you’ve heard all the wonderful things you can do with its built-in wireless functions. Yes, virtually all notebooks come with the capability of being able to connect to the Internet easily while you’re outside of your home. In order to do that, you need to be in a zone that provides wireless Internet access. That zone is affectionately called a Hotspot. How do you find those zones? You’d be happy to know that Manhattan has over 300 hotspots. This real New Yorker can show you how to find them.
An excellent source to finding hotspots in your area is WiFi Hotspot List that lets you browse by your street address or by a particular region. It can display hotspots in many countries and cities around the world. Another good source is
WiFi Finder
The New York City Parks Department will be creating 18 hotspots in New York City parks. Each access point will provide a robust 10 Mbps synchronous connection to the Internet, and will broadcast at 802.11a, b and g. The service will be free for public use.
Some public areas, parts of Central Park and Bryant Park are designated as hotspots but were configured by Verizon DSL. These are available for wireless use by Verizon DSL customers only.
The key thing is that your WiFi enabled notebook computer has lots of hotspots to choose from around New York City and elsewhere. Haven’t got a notebook yet? What are you waiting for?
