News from E3: PS3, Hi-Def Xbox 360, & more

E3 ExpoFrom the 2006 Electronics Entertainment Expo. . .

Sony is to release the PS3 (Playstation 3) around the 17th of November 2006. According to Sony’s press release the PS3 is adding some very exciting features:

“PS3 is the most advanced computer system that serves as a platform to enjoy next generation computer entertainment contents in the home, realized through the combination of Cell and RSX(tm) processors, in addition to the playability of a vast catalog of PlayStation and PlayStation2 software titles.

Having Giga-bit Ethernet and a pre-installed hard disk drive (HDD) as standard in PS3, users will be able to download a variety of contents as well as access on-line games and services over the network.

Equipped with basic input/output ports, PS3 supports a broad range of displays from conventional NTSC/PAL standard TVs to the latest full HD (1080i/1080p) flat panel displays, offering the joy of the most advanced computer entertainment contents to homes around the world. For use in living rooms, maximum heat and noise reduction has been achieved with a noise level equivalent to that of the current slim-line PlayStation 2.

With the overwhelming computational power of the Cell processor, PS3 is capable of playing back content from Blu-ray (BD) disc at a bit rate of multiplex 48Mbps with ease, the maximum bit rate defined in BD standards.

The new controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the world’s most popular PlayStation controller which has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide. The controller for PS3 employs a high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that is capable of processing all parameters within the controller itself, thereby eliminating the need for any additional settings on the display system. By applying this technology, it will become possible to freely control the PS3 system over the network.”

Xbox 360 is offering an optional HD-DVD accessory for high-definition video play. According to Xbox anouncement:

“Xbox 360 ushered in the era of high-definition gaming by standardizing high-definition resolutions and 16×9 widescreen support for every game (Xbox Live® Arcade included) on the system. What’s more, Xbox 360, while powerful on its own, is also a foundation from which new technology and accessories can be added. Chief among these is the recently announced HD DVD add-on.

This much anticipated accessory carries with it an extension of the HD Era that Xbox 360 offers, and provides the most visually stunning movie watching experience available.”

PlayStation 3 is going to be great. Blu-ray isn't Betamax as many say, it will truly be a format that people use. It has so many advantages over Microsoft and Nintendo. Over the Xbox 360, PS3 will have motion detection in the controllers, a 60 GB HD, blu-ray playing (those will cost 700+ when they come out), exclusivity in games, better processor, and the fan base. I can't wait.

After watching the Sony e3 press conference, I will honestly say, I was disappointed.

The games are horrible. "Exclusivity" for games doesn't mean anything if most of the exclusive games are in fact published by Sony. Nintendo and Microsoft have their own Exclusive games, stop using that term, fanboys.

The controller, from initial speculation, is not as well done as they lead us to believe. Also, it seems very stupid to sit on your couch tilting the controller to move around.

$600 for a console seems like asking too much. Considering the Blu-ray drive is $380 alone, they could have sold the console with it as an option instead of shoving it down our throats, or at the very least taking a hit for wanting to push their new format. Typical Sony stupidity.

The PS3 "marketplace" is an exact ripoff of Xbox live, and considering that it is "free", i'm sure it won't come close to being as good as Xbox live. If you have to register for another account for each game as was the case with the PS2, it will fail immediately.

$50 a year for unlimited online gaming across all their games is more than worth it. I don't know why Sony fanboys complain, considering they'll be paying more for the games themselves.

I'd rather buy a PS3 and Xbox 360 and enjoy all kinds of games, rather than recycled, rushed, lackluster games released by Sony all the time.

Whoops, I meant to say I'd rather buy a Wii and Xbox 360, not the PS3!

Sony needs to be more innovative and stop "borrowing" ideas from MS and Nintendo, with the price of one PS3, i can own MS's 360 and Nintendo's wii, you do the math...
