Now, for Cool iPod Accessories
There are a ton of tech-centric Websites out there, but Tech eBlog is a personal favorite. Mainly because they’re fun — they post great overviews of the silly side of gadgets. For example, they did a great list called “The Top 10 Strangest iPod Accessories.” It showed us just how crazy some people will go when decorating their iPod. We get why, though. Part of having style is standing apart from the crowd; that’s hard when everyone’s wearing the same thing. In this case, everyone’s wearing the same fashion accessory: iPods. They’re the most popular MP3 players in America. Since so many have one, everyone looks the same wearing it. The natural urge is to dress yours up as a way of saying, “Hey, I’m unique!”
Tech eBlog posted that story last week, and today on the Business Week site, a very similar article appeared. BW even profiled some of the same items that appeared on TechEBlog’s list. Looks like we aren’t the only ones trolling the Web for story ideas. Still, BW did provide us with a useful bit of information. They spoke with people who track business trends, and they say consumers buy $1 billion worth of iPod accessories each year. People love this stuff and they’re buying it up like crazy.
A lot of the items profiled on TechEBlog seem geared toward home use. That’s odd, since the whole point of an iPod is to have a portable music library. Even though you can use them as home jukeboxes, they’re built to carry and store your favorite songs. Why have an iPod accessory for the home, where less people will see it? The items from the Business Week story seemed like a better fit for using iPods on the go, the way Apple intended. Sadly, a lot of them were out of reach for regular consumers — especially that bulletproof aluminum case. Maybe that’s just as well; those toys don’t really suit the NYC lifestyle. Real New Yorkers Know you need something that meets your practical needs, while still being fun & flashy. It should be functional, easy to use and carry, and look pretty cool. Not TOO cool, though — you don’t want your stuff to be more impressive than you. (Plus you don’t want to risk getting it stolen on the subway or something.)
A good choice if you want others to enjoy your music is the i-Fusion Portable Speakers. They’re portable speakers that fold up into a carrying case. Just open it up and your iPod docks right in. They sound good, too. It’s good for the beach, tailgating parties, camping or anything outdoorsy. If you’re looking to have some fun with your friends’ music, you might like the ION iPod DJ Mixer. Dock two iPods to it and use them like DJ turntables, to create the best party mixes. You can keep your iPod battery from running down with the Travel and Home iPod Charger; there’s a ton of iPod cases to choose from, but if you want to stand out you can do the Paris Hilton thing & use the Tonino Hot Pink Leatherette Case. The brash color guarantees you’ll be noticed from 20 feet away, even in a Manhattan-sized crowd.
Use Tune Transfer for iPod to move your iPod’s music from the player to a PC without using iTunes. Record Internet radio stations and listen to them on your iPod with X-OOM’s MP3 Radio Recorder, or watch clips from your favorite DVDs on the iPod screen with iTransfer DVD 2. Or you can load up Talking Panda’s iPod Drink Mixing Software & using it to become an expert mixologist. Then you can hit the bars & parties and show off your knowledge by getting behind the bar & pouring a few cocktails for friends & strangers alike. The iPod opens up a new world of possibilities for entertainment on the go, constructive and otherwise. We do our best to take advantage of them — and with the right accessories, you can do the same.
