While Roger Waters might get most of the credit for Pink Floyd’s career — what with him manning the ship for classics such as Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals, and Wish You Were Here — he wasn’t the original frontman to the band. No, that honor goes to Syd Barrett, the crazy visionary who lead them band for their first album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. A classic psych-pop album that’s completely different than the epic concept albums of the band’s later years, it’s still a classic in its own right.
The craziest part? The album is forty years old. How’s that for making you feel old? Well, with such a milestone comes a celebration, and in this case it’s in the form of a beautiful, 3-disc commemorative rerelease. Featuring both the stereo and mono version of the album, it also includes a track full of bonus tracks, including b-sides and other previously unheard early Pink Floyd. It’s a must-have for any serious fan of one of the greatest and most popular bands of all time, coming from an era in the band’s history that’s oftentimes looked over.
