The Playstation 3, Sony’s entrant in the next-gen console wars, hasn’t caught on as much as Sony would have liked. That’s due to the expensive Blu-ray drive they crammed inside, which ended up jacking the price up to a gulp-inducing $600. But Sony isn’t a company to take slow sales lying down, which is why it announced a price drop and a new version of their monster console today.
The original 60GB Playstation 3 is now $500, bringing it closer to, if not matching, the competing Xbox 360. There’s also a new 80GB model that comes with a free game (the slick racer Motorstorm) that’ll sell for the old price of $600. With that game going for $60 on its own, it’s not too shabby a deal, especially if you were planning to pick up Motorstorm anyways. Will this be enough to give Sony the kickstart in sales it so badly needs? Only time will tell, but it’s tough to complain about a price drop, eh?
