Playstation 3 Getting a Cheaper 40GB Model

Sony really, really wants to make their Playstation 3 more affordable. First launched at a gasp-inducing $600, its sales have been slow due to that seriously high pricepoint that the built-in Blu-ray drive requires. But slow sales don’t mean the PS3 isn’t a great machine; in addition to being able to play high definition Blu-ray movies, it’s got the super-powerful Cell chip inside, making it incredibly powerful and capable of delivering stunning graphics.
Luckily for you, being either a cheapskate or a financially-responsible adult, you’ve waited for the price to come down, and now it has. Sony just announced that they’re releasing a 40GB version of the Playstation 3 priced at $399, right at Xbox 360 levels. The catch? Well, it turns out that this version doesn’t have backwards compatibility like the other versions, which means it won’t be able to play your old Playstation 2 games. It’s a pretty big bummer, but if you’re willing to keep your old PS2 around for your older-games playing sessions, this is a pretty sweet deal.
