Put Mikado on Your List This Week

New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP) is performing Mikado and Yeoman of the Guard at City Center, on West 55th Street, through January 14. The company, dedicated to performing the late 19th Century works of Gilbert & Sullivan, has been under the leadership of Albert Bergeret since 1974. Remaining true to the traditions of its creators, NYGASP continues to perform G&S works with full orchestra, authentic costumes, and excellent singers. It has modeled its performances of G&S works on the staging from the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company of London, England. On Thursday, January 11, NYGASP will stage a rare performance of The Rose of Persia, a late comic opera that Sullivan composed without Gilbert.
Known for their comic operas, often referred as light operas, Gilbert & Sullivan composed 14 of them. The most popular ones are Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, and Mikado. They have often been cited as being models from which New York musical theater developed.
You can find many recordings of Gilbert & Sullivan’s works HERE, including an excellent CD recording of The Rose of Persia. Tickets for remaining performances are available at the New York City Center box office, West 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.
