Rap Legend MC Mele Mel To Appear at J&R

Mele Mel To Appear at J&R

J&R gets a taste of uptown history in March, when MC Mele Mel performs in-store. One of the first great hip-hop DJs, and the first to refer to himself as an “MC,” he was instrumental in modern music development. He made history as lead rapper of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, when he recorded “The Message” in 1982.

“The Message” told listeners outside of the Bronx about life in one of the country’s worst ghettos. It affected both mainstream America and the rest of the hip-hop scene; it was strictly party music before that. After “The Message,” rappers saw potential in using hip-hop as a vehicle for spreading a socially conscious message. The song has been a touchstone for musicians ever since; its crossover appeal led to Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Here’s your chance to meet a Real New Yorker who changed the course of music. He’ll be signing & performing on Wednesday, March 7th at 12:30. Come down and see what it was about, back in the day.
