I was hesitant to plunk down my cash for REAL STEEL starring Hugh Jackman. I mean, I like robots. I like Hugh Jackman. I just wasn’t sure I wanted to see an eyeful of CGI rendered robots duking it out AND Hugh Jackman thrown in there to lend the movie some star power. This was one of those moments that I was oh so happy to be wrong. First, I learned that REAL STEEL was an adaptation of one of my all-time favorite TWILIGHT ZONE episodes, “STEEL”.
In the aforementioned episode Lee Marvin plays Sam ‘Steel’ Kelly, a down on his luck boxing manager for a robot named Battling Maxo. Hugh Jackman takes on the adapted role of former boxer Charlie Kenton. Kenton was near the top of his game when boxing was changed forever by the introduction of robots into the squared circle. Now Charlie makes the rounds as a fight promoter kit bashing sub par robots on the underground boxing circuit.
This is where REAL STEEL transforms into something more than a glorified CGI-fest. Kenton is reconnected with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) who takes a chance on his father and the two of them embark on a life altering journey. Yes the effects are top-notch. Yes it’s great to see the robots in action. However this film is about a father and son — and a robot. It’s about family. It’s about second chances, which are rare indeed. So I did go see this and I really did enjoy it. I think you’ll enjoy it too. Sit back and watch it with the family.
