Sleater-Kinney Calls It A Day

Sleater Kinney Calls It QuitsOne of the greatest rock bands around just called it quits. Sleater-Kinney just announced an “indefinite hiatus.” There haven’t been many bands who rocked harder in the last couple of decades. We’re sorry to see them go, but hope they move on to bigger and better things.

Sleater-Kinney is an all-girl rock trio, which was a novelty to some. But there’s nothing ‘novel’ about them, or their abilities — that sort of thinking is exactly what they’re against. Coming out of the riot grrl scene, they believed that rock and roll shouldn’t be a boys’ club. They lived up to that belief, producing albums that proved women can (and should) rock as hard as the boys. Often, they proved they could do it better than any boys out there — ask anyone who saw them live. Their approach to music was unique: The group used dual vocalists and dual guitars with no bass, giving them a sound that was unlike anyone else.

As the group got more popular, they stayed as close as possible to their punk roots; they often played shows in smaller clubs after playing the big concert halls, giving more fans a chance to see them & keeping ticket prices affordable for them. They also lent their musical support to various causes, playing shows for several charities. These women are the real deal; they play loud, fast and well - and they support the fans who’ve supported them. Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein & Janet Weiss are everything punk rock should have been, and we’re sad to lose their example.

Their final five shows are expected to be complete blow-outs — the band wouldn’t want it any other way. If you’re a rock fan, this is a set of shows you really should catch. The dates are:

7/29: Louisville, KY - Mellwood Arts Center
7/31: Philadelphia, PA - Starlight Ballroom
8/1: Washington, DC - 9:30 Club
8/2: New York, NY - Webster Hall
8/4: Chicago, IL - Grant Park (Lollapalooza)

The Webster Hall shows might say they’re sold out, but there are ways to score tickets to a sold-out show. This is one of those can’t-miss things, so we suggest you try. If you really can’t, then you can still experience some of the best rock of the past 10 years by purchasing some of their albums.
