Sony Makes Backing Up to DVD a Snap

Sony VRD-MC5 DVD Recorder

News flash: tapes are out. Yes, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but VHS is a dead medium, and other tape formats such as MiniDV are on their way out. Super8? Please. Discs are the way people store and watch things on the moment (at least until everything goes completely digital and formatless), so discs are how you should be storing things. Luckily, Sony makes that really easy to do.

Their VRD-MC5 DVDirect MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder makes transferring your older home movies and photos to DVD an absolute snap. You don’t need to mess with a computer at all, instead just running your VCR and camcorder right into the recorder and hitting a couple of buttons; it takes care of the rest. It can also take pictures from any number of memory card formats and back them up to a DVD just as easily. It’s the perfect way to make sure your old videos are still watchable without giving yourself a technological headache. Then you’ll be able to sit back and relax, at least until the next new format comes out.

Will the VRD-MC5 allow transfer of tapes from a l991 Sony camcorder?
  • Is this machine as "easy to use" as you describe? My VCR is relatively new (standard input/output). In order to use USB, would an adapter work just as well? I have many VHS tapes, which are taking up much too much space and I'd like to rid myself of them.
  • Sure, this item is very easy to use and connects to most camcorders and vcr's with little effort. As long as your source component has an audio/video output setup and operation is a breeze.

I have an old Sharp ViewCam (Hi8) VL-AD260. Will I be able to transfer the tape to the DVD?
  • Hi Mr. Tsang, as long as your camcorder has an audio/video output transferring your video to DVD will be a breeze. The VRDMC5 has composite and s-video inputs that accept analog video.

I have PAL tapes, as well as NTSC. I do not mind playback on DVD only being NTSC, but does anyone know if it will transcribe PAL to the DVD?

I currently have a lot of steps to go through to go VCR to DVD on a dual
Sylvania device, IF I want to play the DVDs on anything other than that device. Will the ouput DVD on this device alow me to play the DVD on my PC, other DVD players, etc.
