Stan Lee — The RNYK Interview

Stan Lee

The other day, we presented a Real New Yorker profile of writer, editor, producer, Chairman Emeritus of Marvel Comics and Real New Yorker, Stan “The Man” Lee. He also agreed to a brief Q&A session with our site. When we contacted him through e-mail, Stan told us about his new & upcoming DVD projects - including one with Ringo Starr, of all people. He also tells us about his cameos in Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four 2. Read on and see what The Man has to say for himself. Don’t forget, he’s doing a signing at J&R this Friday, February 23rd.

RNYK: Describe Mosaic and The Condor
Stan Lee: Mosaic is the incredible tale of a lovely young girl, a high school senior, who wants to be an actress. Through a strange accident, she obtains a mystical superpower which allows her to assume other identities (a great talent for an actress). She learns of an ancient race of killers who are trying to take over Planet Earth — and only our heroine, and a mysterious man named Mosaic, stand between them and the doom of mankind.
The Condor features a young Hispanic skateboard champion who has an accident which injures his leg and makes it seem impossible for him to ever skate again — until a very special girl creates a new, incredible skateboard which gives him supernatural powers-powers which transform him into the masked and heroic Condor; powers he’ll need to battle the mysterious murderers who caused the death of his parents and now threaten the entire civilized world.
RNYK: How long did it take you to produce Mosaic and The Condor from beginning to end.
Stan Lee: A little more than a year — because we wanted to do them right!
RNYK: Why have you chosen to release your new creation through DVD?
Stan Lee: DVD’s are the fastest way to get the story out. A movie would take much longer. Another thought — we feel Mosaic and The Condor would later make a couple of sensational TV series. So the sooner fans can see them, the better.
RNYK: Will you be producing any projects after this?
Stan Lee: Many more. In fact our next DVD features Ringo Starr (of The Beatles). It’s a humorous adventure with music and song, featuring the voice and music of Ringo Starr. Not unexpectedly, we may call it “Ringo!”
RNYK: How do you feel about the success of your classic characters in film?
Stan Lee: It’s indescribably gratifying, exciting, thrilling and almost unbelievable.
RNYK: Do you alway have cameos in Marvel films? Do you have any in Spider-man 3 or Ghost Rider?
Stan Lee: Not always, but usually. I don’t have a cameo if the film is shot too far from Los Angeles because I can’t spare the time for lengthy travel. I haven’t a cameo in Ghost Rider, although Nick Cage is a good friend of mine, because I didn’t create that character. But I do have a really great cameo in Spider-Man 3, in which I actually speak to Peter Parker! And wait’ll you see my cameo in Fantastic Four 2!
RNYK: Will you be appearing at the NY Comic Con?
Stan Lee: Yes. On Friday and Saturday. I’m looking forward to it.
RNYK: Do you have any plans for new comics?
Stan Lee: Sure, but we do them in reverse now. First we do the movie, or DVD or TV series, and then we do the comicbook.
RNYK: What’s your favorite part of coming back to New York?
Stan Lee: Revisiting all the people and places that were so important to me during the many years that I lived in New York.
RNYK: Do you read any comics anymore?

Stan Lee: I’m sorry to say I don’t have the time, unless someone shows me a copy that might be of special interest to me — but my work at POW! Entertainment, which involves DVDs, movies, TV, video games and mobisodes keeps me so busy that I just can’t afford the luxury of keeping up with the comics the way I used to.

Get details of Stan Lee’s appearance at J&R, Friday, February 23rd and directions to J&R’s downtown NYC store.
