“Sweeney Todd” Brings Some Blood to the Modern Musical

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is not your traditional musical. Sure, it’s got its fair share of songs that help push the story forward all sung by the characters, but beyond that, it’s more like a darkly comic horror movie than anything else you’d expect.
The title character, played by Johnny Depp, is a barber who’s been wrongly imprisoned by a lecherous judge. When he’s finally released, he sets up a barber shop with the intention of getting back not just at the judge, but at all of humanity. Teamed up with a barbaric baker who turns Todd’s victims into meat pies, he goes on a murderous rampage that doesn’t discriminate when it comes to choosing its victims. The movie doesn’t shy away from blood and guts, either, with gallons upon gallons of blood being spilled and the camera not shying away from the bloody details. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re looking for a musical unlike any you’ve ever seen before, you can’t go wrong with Sweeney Todd.
