The people began lining up early on Park Row on September 27. Eventually, over 600 rabid fans stretched down the street and around the corner waiting for a chance to meet & greet with J Cole, the newly anointed Prince of Hip-Hop.

J Cole spent hours at J&R Music World, shaking heads, posing for pics and (most importantly) signing copies of his brand-spanking new CD COLE WORLD: THE SIDELINE STORY.

The events of September 11, 2001 transformed not only our Lower Manhattan neighborhood, but the entire world.

We at J&R remember that day with great sadness, but also with admiration for the many heroes who gave their lives on that date, and the many more heroes who have contributed since.

Our stores are only a block away from the site, and the attacks caused us to close our doors for six weeks. But we came back stronger, as did all of Downtown.

We look back at the decade since with great pride in the progress at Ground Zero and in New York City.

And we look forward to the future of the entire area — and J&R’s place in it — with hope and excitement.

Thursday August 25 marked the opening of J&R’s 17th Annual MusicFest & Tech Expo in Downtown NYC, featuring three days of free music, hundreds of product demos, giveaways, seminars and enter to win contests — plus (and maybe most importantly) the biggest savings of the entire summer. Virtually an entire city block of savings — huge deals at all the Park Row stores.

Today’s entertainment featured songstress Zee Avi and NYC alt-rock legend Mike Doughty doing their thing from the stage in J&R’s Music Store at 23 Park Row (an NYC legend in it’s own right).

In addition to being one half of one of the greatest songwriting duos of the Twentieth Century, Nick Ashford was a great friend to J&R. He is fondly remembered for his appearances at J&R with his longtime partner and wife, Valerie Simpson.

Ashford & Simpson’s ties to J&R run deep. The duo performed at the J&R stores in Downtown New York on a number of occasions. In addition, they graciously performed at J&R sponsored charity events. In 2009, J&R founder Rachelle Friedman presented the duo the NARM Outstanding Achievement Award.
