Will this device take books I download in txt, richtext, Word or PDF? In other words, will it read only books I have to buy from the sellers or will it also read the many on line free books and articles? How easy is downloading and then reading.

I recommend you look on eBay. I found five sets of material by just searching for "ebooks DVD Sony reader". People are selling books formatted for either the Amazon Kindle or the Sony reader and perhaps even a third reader. They are already formatted for download to the reader and are sold on DVD media. That should give you a couple of other sources of material to read on the reader.
