The retina of an eye is so critically sensitive that any damage to it can impair your vision. The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye. It acts like the film in a camera — images come through the eye’s lens and are focused on the retina. The retina then converts these images to electric signals and sends them via the optic nerve to the brain. In Apple’s concept, their Retina screen converts digital signals into bright, stunning images with incomparable depth and definition.
Artists and engineers regard Apple’s MacBook Pro as the ultimate graphic tool. Apple’s Macbook Pro line gets a remarkable boost by adding the Retina display technology that was introduced a few months ago on the new iPad.
The new MacBook Pro with the Retina screen offers the first notebook to boast a resolution of 2880×1800, presenting 5.1 megapixels on a 15.4-inch screen. As an incredibly precise artist’s tool, the Retina MacBook Pro comes in at just over 4 pounds and is less than ¾” thin. It’s nearly as light as air. This MacBook Pro is the state-of-art in design and visual power, aimed for the most discriminating user that can appreciate the difference.
Apple continues making the more traditional MacBook Pro models but with more jazz and speed from Apple’s new operating system OSX Mountain Lion and latest Intel processors. The two 13.3” models have backlit LED screens offer up to 1280×800 resolutions, and the two 15.4” models can deliver a very respectable 1440×900 resolution. These are aimed for art students and aspiring artists that seek the finest at affordable ranges. These models come with built-in hard drives and offer options for adding solid-state flash storage. As such, they are slightly thicker and a little heavier than the Retina version.
Retina achieves this by dropping the hard drive and replaces it with solid-state storage only, offering 256GB or 500GB, with an optional upgrade to 768GB.
What’s so astounding about the Retina backlit LED screen is that Apple engineers managed to deliver twice as many pixels of resolution than their already untypical 1440×900 15.4” screen! At up to 2880×1800, the visual possibilities multiply with far sharper clarity and realistic color depth.
Apple seems to realize that on-board memory storage is becoming less critical as there are so many portable terabyte hard drives available from other manufacturers. In addition, Apple offers their iCloud service. Originally designed as a universally accessible personal storage for the iPhone, iPad, and iMac, the new OS6 Mountain Lion expects to offer more features and opportunities for the MacBook Pro models.
Missing from Apple’s new offerings is the 17” MacBook Pro. One guess is that Apple realizes that 17” is more of a desktop replacement. Apple’s objective is to follow their “success” trend at offering lightweight, very mobile computers. Large display options are available through optional projectors and monitors.
Among the millions of artists that have created works over the past 500 years, most people only recall the works of a couple hundred. The Retina MacBook Pro is designed for those unique artists or for those that reach for the newer states of art that others don’t dare to explore.
